BYU-Baylor football matches and prediction: Cougars face angry Bears | News, sports, jobs

Here’s Jared Lloyd’s look at the BYU-Baylor matchups, including his final score prediction for Saturday’s game at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas:

BYU offense vs. Baylor defense

The Cougars didn’t put up big numbers against Kansas State, but they took advantage of three short fields and then took the game with a big lead. That means BYU still has questions to answer about consistency. The Bears have been pretty good on defense this season, despite their disastrous finish at Colorado last week.

Edge: Straight

BYU defense vs. Baylor offense

The Cougars are one of two teams in the country that have yet to allow a passing touchdown. BYU strikes a good balance between solid coverage and creating disruption. The Bear offense has dangerous pieces, but has scored the most points against mediocre defenses.

Edge: BYU

Coaching

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake continues to ensure his team’s performance is closer to his expectations than national expectations. Baylor head coach Dave Aranda hasn’t been able to get things back on track in recent years, leaving some wondering if the Bears will eventually move on despite his great success in 2021.

Edge: BYU

Intangible assets

BYU has already won two road games, but this will be their toughest test yet as there is a great atmosphere at McLane Stadium. The weather should be warm, but not incredibly hot. However, the early morning start gives the Bears an advantage as the Cougars have not performed well in those games. BYU is coming off a big win and risks disappointment while Baylor tries to rebound from a brutal OT loss.

Key Matchup: BYU Wide Receiver vs. Baylor Secondary

The Bears have a big, athletic defensive front, so it won’t be easy for the Cougars to open up a lot of running lanes, especially early in the game. That means BYU has to open things up through the air. Jake Retzlaff can turn to a number of receivers, led by junior Chase Roberts, but they have to be in the right spots and make catches even when contacted. If the Cougars make a few big plays, BYU will be well-positioned to take the win.

Edge: BYU

forecast

Both teams will make some mistakes early on, but then the fight becomes a tough, physical showdown. Neither offense will have consistent success, but Jake Retzlaff will make a few big passes to give the Cougars the lead. Baylor will score late and have a chance to recover, but the BYU defense will be stopped to secure the win.

BYU 25, Baylor 17
