The ABC broadcast is suing Ole Miss’ Matt Jones for “flagrant feigned injury” against Kentucky

Late in the second quarter of Saturday’s game between Ole Miss And Kentucky, Matt Jones went onto the pitch with an obvious injury. However, when the ABC broadcast came out of break, Sean McDonough called out the rebels for a “blatant feigned injury.”

“Luckily Matt Jones survived and left the field,” McDonough said after the timeout. “Just an obviously faked injury.”

Replays were shown Jason Dart He appeared to tell Jones to get to the ground as the two teams lined up. McDonough recognized it and called in a rules analyst Matt Austin for an explanation as to whether such a move was “legal”.

Austin said the rules do not contain specific information about penalties for feigning violations. Although there are rumors that it is “unethical,” he said there is not much officials can do.

“There’s actually nothing in the rulebook that says you can’t do that,” Austin said. “There is very strong language about it being unethical to feign an injury at any point during the game. I know the rule makers have talked about this several times, but at the moment there is nothing in the book that can be done about it.”

McDonough quickly called for a change in the rules. He argued it was clear and obvious that Dart told Jones to get down.

“You should put something in the book if it’s that egregious,” McDonough said.

Refereeing became a big topic of conversation in the first half of Saturday’s game. Mark Stoops was visibly upset with the referees after the first quarter and with ABC Molly McGrath asked him about it. He said it was a “personal” problem and didn’t go into details.

“It’s between us and them,” Stoops told McGrath on Saturday’s show. “It’s a personal problem for us.”

Over the course of a quarter, Ole Miss had five penalties for 28 yards while Kentucky wasn’t picked off at all. But Stoops was particularly vocal early in the first quarter when UK was ruled offside – a penalty that Ole Miss declined – as an ABC analyst Greg McElroy thought the rebels were not properly positioned on the offensive. He also had some words between quarters.
