Leipzig back on the road to success

RB Leipzig is picking up speed again in the Bundesliga and has impressively ended its goal flute. Coach Marco Rose’s team overwhelmed FC Augsburg 4-0 (2-0) and can go into the next Champions League duel with Juventus Turin with a lot of tailwind.

Double packers Benjamin Sesko (11th/15th), Lois Openda (46th) and Xavi Simons (57th) scored for the Leipzig team, who recently had to be content with two draws in the league without any goals. RB will be back in the premier class against the Italian record champions on Wednesday (9 p.m./DAZN).

RB coach Rose did not want to overestimate the situation at Leipzig after the 2-1 defeat at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League and the 0-0 draw against Union Berlin and FC St. Pauli. “The boys want it,” the coach emphasized and admitted: “A few things are not so easy for us at the moment – creating chances and scoring goals.”

Against Augsburg, his team looked straight forward through Xavi, but David Raum’s subsequent cross slipped clearly. Augsburg again tried to disrupt Leipzig’s game early on, but after Openda’s remarkable shot with his heel, Sesko took the lead and followed it up with a header shortly afterwards.

RB kept pushing towards the goal, but Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (27th) missed the huge chance to score. After RB defender Lutsharel Geertruida brought down Augsburg’s Dimitrios Giannoulis in the penalty area, Gouweleeuw went for the penalty – but was denied by Peter Gulacsi, who strongly parried the shot into the bottom left corner.

The FCA didn’t let this discourage them, but initially they couldn’t get through against the now somewhat passive Leipzig team. After a mistake by Keven Schlotterbeck, Openda appeared free in front of Nediljko Labrovic, but the Augsburg goalkeeper initially prevented the hosts from scoring.

Shortly after the break, the Belgian striker took his first chance, but shortly after, Xavi increased the score. Leipzig didn’t let up and continued to have the party under control.
