Helene deaths in Tampa Bay now at 10

The death toll from Hurricane Helene in Pinellas County stands at eight as of Saturday morning, Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said in an interview Saturday. According to the sheriff:

One person drowned in St. Petersburg’s Shore Acres. Two people drowned at Indian Rocks Beach. On Treasure Island, one person drowned and another died of a stress-related heart attack due to the storm. A woman in Dunedin died when she returned to her mobile home to get her keys and the building collapsed and caught fire. The circumstances of the other two were still being investigated, he said.

All were in mandatory evacuation zones, Gualtieri said.

There were two reported deaths related to the storm in Tampa on Friday.

According to the Associated Press, the Helene death toll is at least 44 people in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. They include three firefighters, a woman and her one-month-old twins and an 89-year-old woman whose house was hit by a falling tree.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
