Five must-reads before kick-off:

* No player on Michigan State’s roster has ever played a competitive game against Ohio State, and several suffered some of the worst defeats in program history in that matchup. But the Spartans players say they still enter the game with confidence.

* Quarterback Aidan Chiles says he is not discouraged after a three-interception game against Boston College, while Jonathan Smith called the performance a “learning experience.”

* Michigan State’s injury list continues to grow; Four of his top five receivers failed against Boston College. And Jonathan Smith said he expects that list to be “similar” this week.

* Improving red zone performance and receiver depth are two of the five things Matt Wenzel should keep an eye on this week.

* Michigan State returned from a demoralizing loss to Boston College around 4 a.m. Sunday morning. It needed to quickly reboot and put this loss behind it in a short week.
