The Wild Robot starts well beyond expectations; Transformers One collapses in week 2

It looks like The Wild Robot will hit theaters with over $30 million, while Transformers One has lost a large chunk of its audience.

In a surprising twist of fate at the often fickle box office, the extremely well-reviewed film was released The wild robot opened far beyond expectations. According to Deadline, the film is currently opening at about $35 million, which is about $10 million more than even the most optimistic industry estimates and about $20 million above my own projections. Good for Dreamworks, because this is truly one of the best films they’ve ever made (check out Steve Sigh’s glowing review here). In the meantime, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice With $15.5 million, the country moves up to second place, easily surpassing the domestic mark of $250 million.

Unfortunately, Transformers OneDespite excellent word of mouth, the film crashes at the box office, posting a huge 59% drop in its second week for a $10 million weekend. With a domestic total of $39 million, this film will be lucky to cross the $55 million mark by the end of its run, which is disastrous for the franchise. That’s a shame because it’s actually a good film! It seems that this is a franchise that may have had its day, even if Paramount is still planning that crossover film with GI Joe.

Meanwhile, Francis Ford Coppola Megalopolis is already being dubbed “Megaflopulous” online after being beaten by the Indian Telugu film on Friday night. Devara part 1 (which stars RRR‘s NT Rama Rao Jr.), although Deadline has a hard time pinning down the final number. They say the total could be between $3.2 million and $5 million, but either way, this is a disastrous start for Coppola’s passion project. To be honest, even though I didn’t like the movie (at all – as you can see from my review), it makes me sad to see the movie collapse so completely at the box office, because even if I hadn’t liked it – I guess still that people should see it.
