The mayor of Northville releases a statement regarding the tragic death of a 12-year-old in Howell

NORTHVILLE, Mich. (WILX) – Northville’s mayor released a statement Thursday regarding the tragic incident that resulted in the death of a 12-year-old boy during a field trip to Howell Nature Center.

On a field trip on September 26, Our Lady of Victory School sixth-grader Declan Carter was at the nature center during a field trip when a tree tragically fell on the 12-year-old.

Carter was flown to CS Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, where he later died.

“I had the pleasure of getting to know Declan as I had visited him and his sister Georgia outside their home many times, especially for lemonade on hot summer afternoons,” said Mayor Brian P. Turnbull. “He had great academic, athletic (as one of the best runners in the region) and social potential as part of the fabric and DNA of Northville.

“All of us at City Hall send our thoughts and prayers to the family, including his father John Carter (an esteemed city council leader), his mother Liz Carter and his sisters Georgia and Ainsley.”

Carter died in the hospital shortly after 8 p.m.
