Pistons owner Tom Gores buys 27 percent of the Chargers

Who has it better than us?

A multi-billionaire who owns an NBA team and just bought a fairly large portion of an NFL team. (“Nobody” is really catchier.)

PFT has confirmed that Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores has finalized a deal to purchase 27 percent of the LA Chargers. Although Tom Gores is chairman and CEO of the private equity fund Platinum Equity, he is purchasing the shares on his own responsibility.

Gores will have no control or ability to control him, and he will not be involved in the daily life of the Chargers.

He’s essentially buying out Dea Spanos Berberian, the sister of controlling owner Dean Spanos. The move resolves a long-running dispute within the Spanos family that led to several legal battles.

The price to be paid for the 27 percent share is not known. This number would reveal the appreciation of the team. Some in league circles believe NFL franchises are inching closer to a base value of $8 million to $10 million. The record sale occurred in 2023 when a group led by Josh Harris purchased the Commanders for $6.05 billion.

The purchase is expected to be approved by the league’s owners at their regularly scheduled quarterly meeting next month.
