The Red Sox’ beloved pitcher is expected to leave Boston in free agency

The Boston Red Sox will have to go back to the drawing board in the near future.

The 2024 Major League Baseball regular season is just a few weeks away. Boston is still fighting for a wild card spot in the American League, but the math isn’t on the team’s side. The Red Sox have just 10 games left this season and are four games out of a playoff spot.

Boston still has a slim chance, but time is not on his side. It looks like the Red Sox will miss the playoffs for the second year in a row and will have to make some tough decisions this winter. Boston has to decide who to sign on a free transfer and who to let go.

That’s why FanSided’s Cody Williams predicted starting pitcher Nick Pivetta won’t be back in 2025.

“Overall, veteran Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta’s numbers don’t look too bad, as he has a 4.37 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP on the season at 31 years old – despite the record of “The 5-11 he put up certainly leaves a lot to be desired,” Williams said. “However, any Red Sox fan can tell you that’s not even close to being indicative of the true Pivetta experience, whenever he pitches. Yes, there’s no doubt he can give you eight shutout innings on any given night.”

“It’s also just as likely that he’ll be run off the mound before the end of the second inning. What’s worse is that this hot-cold nature not only goes from game to game, but also from inning to… How many times have fans watched about three elite innings only to see him face the next two batters he looks like this season with Houck, Brayan Bello and… has provided something of a foundation for his pitching staff? Even guys like Kutter Crawford haven’t changed at all, even if they themselves have been inconsistent, and at 31 years old that seems unlikely at this point.

Boston has a decision to make on Pivetta, but it doesn’t look like he’s coming back.
