Red Sox veteran not expected to return as big payday looms

The Boston Red Sox could see some serious changes in the next few months.

Obviously something has to change. Boston is once again mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, and while it has made progress this year, it hasn’t been enough. The Red Sox are building something good, but they will have to turn to the free agent or trade market to add more.

That also means some players may not return as Boston looks to fill spots. FanSided’s Zach Pressnell tried to predict players who might not return in 2025, mentioning hot-tempered starting pitcher Nick Pivetta as someone who could sign elsewhere in free agency.

“Pivetta, 31, is about to enter free agency, where he will likely command more money than he is worth,” Pressnell said. “While he was mostly solid in Boston, the Red Sox would be wise to spend the $20 million or so he commands on someone else.”

“Ultimately, Pivetta will never be the ace Boston needs. He’s an inning eater in the back of the rotation at this point, and Boston needs to improve the end of their rotation or else they’ll continue to perform at a mediocre level.”

Pivetta has been a very solid figure for the Red Sox over the last few years and has been consistent. However, he is expected to receive a contract worth around $27 million over two years, and that might be too much for the Red Sox to bring him back.
