Tigers clinch first playoff spot in 10 years: Live updates recap

Note: Refresh this page during the Tigers-White Sox game to see the latest updates

Top 9: Tyler Holton finished with a strikeout, a walk and a hit. Jason Foley finished without a hit, making the victory perfect. Tigers 4, White Sox 1

Below 8: Jake Rogers hits a double, but the Tigers score 2 in the 8th. Excitement is now starting to grow among these hungry fans. Tigers 4, White Sox 1

Top 8: Will Vest goes five outs (two via strikeout) without a hit, and Tyler Holton ends the inning with a strikeout, putting the Tigers three outs from the postseason. Tigers 4, White Sox 1

Below 7: The Tigers get insurance. Andy Ibanez hits a double and moves to third on a very White Sox fielding error by center fielder Dominic Fletcher. After a walk from Matt Vierline, he was driven home by a double from Riley Greene at the center field wall. Vierling scores on a wild pitch (the Tigers’ second run off a wild pitch tonight). The White Sox showed many Tigers fans in this inning why they are the worst team in modern baseball history. Tigers 4, White Sox 1

Top 7: The Tigers finished the 7th hitless with a nice play from Matt Vierling, who picked up a chopper off a jumper and fired a strike to first. Announced number of participants: 44,435. Tigers 2, White Sox 1

Below 6: We’re gearing up for another close Tigers game in the late innings. The Tigers got just a walk from Spencer Torkelson in the sixth and took a one-run lead in the final three innings. Will Vest comes on to make the 7th pitch. Tigers 2, White Sox 1

Top 6: The White Sox get on the field in the sixth thanks to a two-out solo home run by Zach DeLoach in the sixth. A small miscommunication almost leads to the Tigers dropping a fly ball on their next at-bat, but Riley Greene makes a sliding catch to end the inning. Tigers 2, White Sox 1

Below 5: The Tigers reach the White Sox bullpen and quickly take the field. Jared Shuster came in and threw balls on 11 of his first 16 pitches, loading the bases with two walks and a single by Parker Meadows. A wild pitch scored one run, then a sacrifice fly by Matt Vierling scored a second. Difficult evening, however, for Justyn-Henry Malloy, who ended the inning with his third strikeout. Tigers 2, White Sox 0

Top 5: Three innings so far with a one-hit ball from Brant Hurter, who induced three easy flyouts in the fifth. Tigers 0, White Sox 0

Below 4: The Tigers loaded the bases with a Riley Greene single, an error and a walk. But with two outs, Trey Sweeney hit a ground ball to center to end the threat. The good news, however, is that Crochet is at 62 pitches, his most since August 9, and could likely be done after this long inning. Tigers 0, White Sox 0

Top 4: Strong inning for Hurter, the team was eliminated after 12 pitches as we move quickly at Comerica Park. Some fans arrived a little late, but now we have a full house and a great atmosphere. Tigers 0, White Sox 0

Below 3: The Tigers have trouble getting to Garrett Crochet as they go down in order in the third period. But the good news is that Crochet has done a pitch count and will likely get between 50 and 60 pitches tonight. He is now 35.

Top 3: Brant Hurter came into the game for the third time and gave up a single, but ended the inning with a four-pitch strikeout. Tigers 0, White Sox 0

Bottom 2: Spencer Torkelson hit a single up the middle with one out, but Crochet hit a grounder up the middle from Trey Sweeney for an easy double play in the bottom of the inning. Tigers 0, White Sox 0

Top 2: White Sox first baseman Gavin Sheets hit a ball to the warning track to scare that big home crowd, but Brenan Hanifee recovered, ejected from the team and likely finished his opening assignment with two scoreless innings. Tigers 0, White Sox 0

Bottom 1: Matt Vierling hit a one-out double down the left field line, but Garrett Crochet struck out Riley Greene and Justyn-Henry Malloy to retire. Tigers 0, White Sox 0

Top 1: Strange play as Chicago’s Zach DeLoach hit what appeared to be a one-out triple into the right field corner, but a fan interfered with the ball during the play, causing it to be returned to second. A fielder’s choice moved him to third, but Brenan Hanifee triggered a pop-up to end the threat. Tigers 0, White Sox 0

Foreplay: Before the first pitch it is 73 degrees and a half, although it is cloudy and seems cooler. No rain forecast. The Tigers wear their traditional white home jerseys instead of their City Connect jerseys (traditionally worn at Friday home games). No one will talk about a win until it happens, but the Tigers seem to acknowledge that they don’t want photos of their victory in City Connect jerseys.

A large crowd is expected this evening. It’s the first home game of the weekend and a chance to win.

DETROIT – All eyes will be on Comerica Park tonight as the Tigers can clinch their first postseason berth since 2014 with a win over the Chicago White Sox.

And if they lose, all eyes will turn to Minnesota, where a Twins loss to the Orioles will also give the Tigers the final wild-card spot and entry into the postseason.

The Tigers are hoping it doesn’t come to that, and if the last 41 games are any indication, that probably won’t be the case: The Tigers are 30-11 since Aug. 11, the best record in baseball over that span .

Most recently, the Tigers defeated the Rays at home this week and were on the verge of the postseason. Now all they need is a win over the 120-loss White Sox to cap an impressive run into the postseason.

Brenan Hanifee will be the Tigers’ opener against White Sox ace Garrett Crochet. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m
