Nick Pivetta will make his final start of the season for the Red Sox, and depending on how things play out this winter, it could be his final start in a Red Sox uniform.

Pivetta, who will enter free agency at the end of the season, will start Friday’s opener against the Tampa Bay Rays. Pivetta comes into the game with a record of 6-11, 4.21 ERA and 166 strikeouts in 139 innings, and since being acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies in 2020, he has appeared in 130 games for Boston and has a wide ERA of 4 .31 over 626.1 innings for highest total on the team over that stretch.

He will face Tampa Bay’s Taj Bradley, who is 7-11 with a 4.30 ERA.

Trevor Story will be second in the order for Boston, Triston Casas and Connor Wong will be third and fourth, and Ceddanne Rafaela will start in midfield. Tyler O’Neill, who has struggled against tight end, is not in the lineup, although Red Sox manager Alex Cora said before the game that O’Neill could be back tomorrow.

Should Boston win on Friday, the Red Sox will achieve a record of at least .500 while securing third place in the AL East.
