Kenley Jansen heads home before the final home series of the Red Sox season

Earlier this week, the Red Sox shut down closer Kenley Jansen and placed him on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation to officially end his season. He wasn’t on the team’s last road trip to Toronto, and now it looks like he won’t be on the team’s last home series in Boston either.

When the Red Sox clubhouse opened to reporters on Friday, Jansen’s name tag was missing from his locker. Coach Alex Cora subsequently confirmed that the veteran had already gone home and would not be with the club for the final games.

“Yeah, he went home,” Cora said. “I spoke to him this week and when it was over two days ago he didn’t want to pitch anymore. There were some things we talked about, there are other things going on with him, so yeah.”

With Jansen poised to hit free agency, the closer has in all likelihood thrown his final pitch in Boston.

The 36-year-old signed a two-year, $32 million contract before the 2023 season and recorded 56 saves with a 3.44 ERA in 99.1 innings during his time with the Red Sox. This season, he posted 27 saves in 31 opportunities and posted a 3.29 ERA in 54.2 innings.

Jansen also now sits fourth on the all-time career list with 447 saves and could potentially pass Lee Smith (478) for third place next season.
