Raymond of the Red Wings scores the winning goal in the 4-2 preseason opener against the Blackhawks

While the TIgers were putting the finishing touches on their suddenly exciting season, the Red Wings were taking the first small steps on their own.

Third-period goals from Lucas Raymond and Olli Maatta gave the Wings a 4-2 friendly win in Chicago on Wednesday.

Raymond scored on a power play at 3 minutes, 41 seconds and had assists from Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat to tie the game at 2-2. Maatta then gave the Wings the lead at 14:42, assisted by Erik Gustafsson and Emmitt Finnie.

Tyler Motte scored the only goal of the first period with a deflected shot at 1:10. Austin Watson and Joe Veleno assisted on the goal. The Blackhawks took a 2-1 lead in the second period on goals from Craig Smith and Teuvo Teravainen. Smith’s goal came at 6:50 on assists from Ryan Donato and TJ Brodie. Teravainen’s goal came at 9:03, with Connor Bedard notching the only assist.

Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry tied the game 2-2 at 18:38. Carter Mazur and Marco Kasper had the assists.

Ville Husso played two periods for the Wings and stopped 15 of 17 shots. Sebastian Cossa was in goal in the third period and made ten saves.

Former Wings goalkeeper Petr Mrazek allowed two goals on 23 shots in 40 minutes. Mitchell Weeks took over for Mrazek in the third period and allowed two goals on six shots.

The Red Wings and Blackhawks meet again on Friday at 7 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena. The Wings play at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, also at 7 p.m
