New Duke basketball sharpshooter torches nets in intrasquad scrimmage

Darren Harris arrived in Durham this summer as the lowest-ranking member of Duke basketball head coach Jon Scheyer’s top-ranked 2024 recruiting list. But that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a celebrated prep player himself.

No, the 2023-24 Gatorade Virginia Player of the Year was ranked No. 39 overall in the 247Sports 2024 Composite, thanks in large part to his remarkably sophisticated outside shooting stroke.

If the 6-foot-1, 200-pound Harris, a four-star guard/forward from Herndon, Va., continues to knock down every shot he attempts in the team’s intramural action, he may have a bigger role than many others that he expected in his rookie season.

This week, the Duke basketball social media team posted some clips from the Blue Devils’ official practice at the Coach K Center. Headlining the highlights is Harris’ impressive 8-for-8 mark from 3-point land:

All eight are catch-and-shoot types — a testament to Harris’ ability to break away from screens and get into position for a splash — and most have at least one hand in his face.

The other five Duke basketball freshmen include college hoops’ No. 1 newcomer, phenomenal forward Cooper Flagg, as well as four other former five-star composite recruits in guard/forward Isaiah Evans, guard/forward Kon Knueppel, center Khaman Maluach and center Patrick Ngongba II.

Jon Scheyer’s third Blue Devil squad begins the season on November 4th at home against Maine.
