Trump was forced to cancel the outdoor rally in Wisconsin due to a lack of intelligence

Former President Donald Trump was forced to cancel a rally outside Wisconsin due to intelligence shortages.

The rally was planned for Saturday at an airport, but the agency said it did not have the necessary personnel to secure the area, according to CBS News. Instead, the former president will speak at a smaller indoor venue in Prairie du Chien, in the southwestern part of the state on the Iowa border.

The Secret Service said it was short-staffed because of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where it must ensure the security of foreign leaders while they are in the United States.

An agency official told CBS News that the agency was “never designed to provide such a high level of protection to a growing number of protected individuals.”

“Our personnel and equipment are being pushed to the limit to maintain the current operational tempo,” they added. “This planned event in Wisconsin also took place during the United Nations General Assembly, where the Secret Service is responsible for the security of over 140 world leaders in the face of a challenging global threat environment.”

The Secret Service stepped up its protection for Trump after the July 13 assassination attempt on the Republican candidate in Butler, Pennsylvania, in which he was struck by a bullet before being covered by agents. One participant in the rally was shot dead by the gunman and two others were injured.

An alleged second attempt to kill Trump was aborted on September 15 when an agent opened fire on the suspect, who fled but was later captured heading down I-95.

Secret Service officials have asked Congress for more funding and resources even as lawmakers have sharply criticized the Secret Service over the July 13 security failures. This week, lawmakers approved $231 million in new funding for the agency.

The service is tasked with protecting foreign leaders while they are in the United States, as well as President Joe Biden and his family, as well as former presidents, vice presidents, their families and candidates for president and vice president.

According to CBS, the service currently protects about three dozen people on an ongoing basis.

The Trump campaign has reduced the frequency of outdoor rallies after the Pennsylvania shooting, saying they require more coordination and planning.

“Former President Donald Trump is receiving increased protection from the U.S. Secret Service and our top priority is to mitigate risks to ensure his continued safety at all times,” a spokesperson for the service told the network.
