Safety measures are in place for the State Fair of Virginia ahead of opening weekend

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – There are no changes to the plans for the State Fair of Virginia.

The starting signal will be fired as planned on Friday morning in the Meadow Event Park.

The On Your Side Safety Team handles safety at the fair, especially after the recent brawls at Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens.

The state fair is maintaining the security measures of previous years. She assumes that metal detectors, gun bans and police patrols will ensure everyone’s safety.

“The day before is one of the busiest days of the year, but we’re really in good shape, and at this point we’re at the end, counting down the hours and putting the finishing touches,” Marlene Jolliff State Fair of Virginia said.

The countdown is on and staff at the State Fair of Virginia are preparing for thousands to come through its gates on Friday.

“We are also working with RMC Events to have a presence at the gates,” Jolliff said. “We have a good thing going; We follow the same basic procedures as in the past and have a good track record.”

Joliffe said they take safety very seriously and meet four times a year with their multi-agency safety committee.

She said there are no new rules this year compared to previous years.

“We have security passage, metal detection and I would say we have a very strict operation,” Jolliff said.

Everyone must pass through metal detectors before entering, and state police and local law enforcement will always be on site. Bags could be checked, and weapons of any kind are prohibited at the state market.

“We’ll have officers at various intersections, we’ll have officers in the parking lots who can assist and assist people as they enter the ticket booth,” VSP Sgt. Dylan Davenport said.

Davenport said state police were well aware of the fights that broke out at the Chesterfield Fair and Kings Dominion, but said they were ready.

“It is certainly concerning that our Virginians and visitors are unable to attend events because sometimes there is an element that wants to be disruptive, but we are paying attention to these reports as they come out so that we can stay abreast of everything going on “Then stop it before it gets out of control,” Davenport said.

Gates open at 10 a.m. Friday morning. The fair runs until October 6th.
