After Ohio distributed school report cards, the U.S. Department of Education on Monday recognized 14 Ohio schools as 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools for academic excellence.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools for “overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.”

Started in 1982, the program nominates up to 420 schools each year, and this year 356 received the Blue Ribbon award. The Ministry of Education awarded the award to 316 public schools and 40 non-public schools.

What is a Blue Ribbon School?

Top public school officials from each state nominate National Blue Ribbon public schools.

The Ministry of Education sets minimum requirements that certain schools must meet in order to receive the award.

An example of one of the minimum requirements is that at least one-third of nominated public schools in each state must have a “high proportion of students from disadvantaged backgrounds.” The Energy Department said each state’s top officials would define what constitutes a “disadvantaged background,” but it could include students eligible for free and reduced-price school meals; students with disabilities; students learning English; students with a migration background; and/or students receiving services under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

Public schools must also meet criteria based on their students’ performance on state tests in reading and math or other measures of student achievement, such as. B. Graduation rates or student growth on state tests.

Schools can be recognized as “Exemplary High Achieving Schools” or “Exemplary Schools for Closing Achievement Gap.”

Criteria for Becoming a Blue Ribbon School

To receive National Blue Ribbon designation, public schools must have at least 100 students enrolled and assessment data for at least 10 students in each tested grade for both reading and math.

The Council for American Private Education (CAPE) is responsible for nominating non-public schools. The DOE recommends that schools wishing to be nominated contact the organization directly.

Schools that participate in the program can be awarded the National Blue Ribbon School flag, which the DOE calls a “recognized symbol of exceptional teaching and learning.”
