Chappell Roan cancels appearances at All Things Go Festival

Two days after posting a video showing her intense frustration with the public reaction to her reluctance to support a presidential candidate, Chappell Roan is making her appearance at the All Things Go Festival this weekend, in New York on Saturday and on Sunday in Washington, DC, canceled.

“I apologize to the people who were waiting to see me at All Things Go in NYC and DC this weekend, but I won’t be able to perform,” she wrote in a social media post. “Things have become overwhelming over the last few weeks and I’m really feeling it.”

“I’m feeling pressure to prioritize a lot of things at the moment and I need a few days to prioritize
Health. I want to be present at my performances and give the best show possible. Thank you for your understanding. I’ll be back soon xox.”

Roan has often spoken about the difficulties of coping with fame as her profile has risen dramatically in recent months, particularly about stalkers and fan demands. Like Wednesday’s videos, these statements are often made in TikTok videos that clearly show their frustration.

Last month she said: “You have to answer me questions, just answer my questions briefly: If you saw a random woman on the street, would you yell at her from your car window?” Would you harass her in public? “Would you go up to a random lady and say, ‘Can I take a picture with you?’ and she’s like, ‘No, what the fuck?’ and then you get mad at this random lady,” she said. “Would you be offended if she said no to your time because she has her own time? Would you stalk your family? Would you follow her? Would you try to analyze her life and bully her online? This is a lady you don’t know and she doesn’t know you at all. Would you assume that she is a good person or would you assume that she is a bad person? Would you assume that everything you read about her online is true? I’m a random bitch, you’re a random bitch. Just think about it for a moment, okay?”

The pressure is understandable, as she has become the fastest-rising star in recent memory, even though her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, was released almost a year ago. She literally lit up the stage at the VMAs earlier this month and is the odds-on favorite to win the Grammy for Best New Artist, among other potential wins.

However, the pressure that comes with such sudden fame was daunting. She continued in the video above: “When I’m on stage, when I’m performing, when I’m in costume, when I’m at a work event, when I’m doing press… I’m at work.” In any other circumstance I’m not in work mode. I’m clocked out. “I don’t agree with the idea that I owe people I don’t know, don’t trust, or who scare me a reciprocal exchange of energy, time, or attention – just because they express admiration.”
