Helene disrupts power in Athens; Section of the Athens Perimeter closed

A northern section of the Athens Perimeter was shut down early Friday, possibly for the rest of the day, after a power distribution line was damaged, according to Athens-Clarke County Fire Chief Nate Moss.

A section of the bypass between Tallassee Road and Atlanta Highway is affected.

“It could be an all-day repair, so the loop between those two exits will be closed,” Moss said around 7 a.m. Friday. “We are currently working with the Department of Transport to arrange a diversion.”

This damage was the biggest problem related to Tropical Storm Helene, which passes through Athens at 7 a.m

“Please urge everyone to stay home for the next three to four hours as this is strongly recommended out of an abundance of caution,” Moss said.

There were other minor road closures in the district, he said. Moss said police, fire and public works responded to reports of downed trees and other traffic hazards.

“We have about 6,100 customers without power across the county through the various utilities,” he said.

The main location for these problems, Moss said, is in the southeastern part of the county in the Gaines School Road and Cedar Shoals Road areas.

Helen Impact: Updates on Hurricane Helene: The storm makes landfall and reaches Georgia

Georgia Power also reported an outage early in the morning in the Hawthorne area, affecting about 250 customers, and another outage in the Winterville area, including Oglethorpe County, affecting about 660 customers. Energy teams responded to these problem areas.

It has been raining non-stop in the Athens area, with fluctuating wind speeds, as Helene makes her way north.

In Madison County, more than 300 customers were affected south of Danielsville along the U.S. Highway 29 corridor and more than 400 customers were affected in an area from Comer to Carlton. According to Georgia Power, about 250 customers in Elbert County were affected by a power outage in a section north of Elberton.

The storm is also impacting Oconee County, where a large stretch south from Watkinsville to Bishop and North High Shoals is affecting about 1,200 customers.

In Oglethorpe County, the largest outage was reported in an area stretching from Maxeys in the south to the Union Point area in Greene County.
