Summer time 2024: The days are getting longer

play

It’s getting cooler.

And it gets dark earlier.

That means it’s officially fall, which means it won’t be long until daylight saving time ends in 2024.

When will the clocks go back in 2024?

Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 3, 2024.

This returns us to standard time and Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends.

When local time reaches 2 a.m., clocks move back one hour to 1 a.m

Many devices such as phones and computers automatically switch to standard time. However, keep an eye on non-smart devices such as microwaves and some car radios, as well as any clocks with hands that require manual adjustment.

What do we do during summer time?

The end of daylight saving time means that there is more light in the morning and it gets dark earlier in the evening.

Sunrise and sunset will be approximately one hour earlier on Sunday, November 3rd than on Saturday, November 2nd.

When is the shortest day of the year in 2024?

Sunrise is getting later and sunset is getting earlier as we move into winter and there are fewer hours of daylight overall – the Earth’s tilt means the Northern Hemisphere points away from the Sun.

The shortest day of the year is the first day of winter or the winter solstice. In 2024 this will take place on Saturday December 21st.

Why did we introduce daylight saving time?

According to the United States Naval Observatory, the Standard Time Act introduced daylight saving time in America on March 19, 1918, before being quickly repealed in 1919.

Daylight saving time was then regulated locally until World War II, when daylight saving time was implemented year-round nationwide from February 9, 1942 to September 30, 1945 to conserve energy for the war effort. When the war ended, daylight hours were again regulated locally, with usage varying by state and locality.

Then came the Uniform Time Act of 1966, which established standardized start and end dates for daylight saving time but allowed for local exceptions. The Uniform Time Act mandated that daylight saving time begin on the last Sunday in April and end on the last Sunday in October.

The start and end times have undergone numerous changes over the years, including during the “energy crisis” of the 1970s.

Since 2007, daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.

What is EST, EDT?

You may see EST or EDT based on times in the Eastern Time Zone.

Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) applies between March and November, during daylight saving time.

Eastern Standard Time (EST) applies for the rest of the year.

For other United States time zones such as Central, Mountain, Pacific, etc., the references change to CST, MST, PST, etc.
