Al Michaels laments the number of flags in the Cowboys vs. Giants game: “Looks like Juneteenth”

Veteran host Al Michaels made no secret of his frustration with the sloppy, slow first half of the Dallas Cowboys-New York Giants “Thursday Night Football” game.

In particular, play-by-play broadcaster Amazon Prime expressed disdain for the level of penalties taken by Clay Martin’s team in the first 30 minutes.

The Cowboys and Giants were whistled for a total of 12 violations in the first half, but the flags hit the field more often. The referees picked up a few flags and gave a few penalties, which led to a lot of stoppages in the first half.

After the two-minute warning, Michaels annoyedly joked with color commentator Kirk Herbstreit about the sheer number of flags they had seen in the first half.

“It looks like Juneteenth out here, aka Flag Day, as you know,” Michaels quipped, before saying Martin “looked like a referee straight out of the central cast.”

The longer the half dragged on, the more disillusioned Michaels became. He initially sounded excited when Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux was caught offside on a third-and-12, but the life drained from his voice as more infractions were called on the play.

“We have another flag. They have two more flags in the backfield. No laundry left,” Michaels said angrily. “And you’re getting a lot of calls.”

Martin then announced that there were fouls against both teams during the game. Michaels’ answer?

“I bet,” he said.

Michaels’ cheekiness didn’t stop there. When the Cowboys were whistled for a false start before a punt with 14 seconds left in the half, Herbstreit asked if that foul was the eighth of the half against Dallas.

“No, it’s the 147th,” Michaels replied, eliciting a laugh from his partner.

Herbstreit decided to continue to pressure Michaels to discuss the punishments. He asked if Michaels had ever seen so many penalties in a single half in his career.

The veteran announcer believed it was actually a record for a game he was calling.

“You’re going to need some new flags in the second half,” Michaels joked. “These are dirty.”

Michaels continued to complain about the state of the game in the second half. He expressed surprise that the first penalty of the third quarter wasn’t called until 5:20 into the game and was surprised that the Giants had only called four penalties early in the fourth quarter.
