MN DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE REMINDS OWNERS/TENANTS TO APPLY FOR 2022 REFUND

The Minnesota Department of Revenue reminds homeowners and renters to apply for their 2022 property tax refund before August 15, 2024. Additionally, applications for 2023 refunds can be submitted until August 15, 2025. Renters who have already applied are already receiving their refunds, while homeowners can expect to receive their refunds starting in late August.

More than 987,000 Minnesota residents have already applied for a property tax refund for 2022. To date, nearly $900 million in refunds have been paid out. The average refund is about $1,465 for homeowners and $964 for renters.

Taxpayers should consider these tips when applying for a property tax refund:

  • Find out if you are eligible for a property tax refund. Renters and homeowners who meet certain requirements may be eligible. Visit our website to check if you are eligible or type “property tax refund” into the search box.
  • Homeowners can submit for free. Eligible homeowners can use the department’s electronic filing system to file their property tax refund for free. Visit our website to see if you are eligible to use this free service.
  • Renterhave two options for submission. Renters can file their tax return using a tax software provider or on paper. For more information, see the “Claim for a refund” heading on our website.
  • Provide all information. Renters should be sure to include the rent payment certificate issued by their landlord in January. Homeowners should be sure to use the information from their property tax returns issued by their county each spring.
  • Direct deposit. Direct deposit is the safest way to receive your refund. Make sure your banking information is correct when you file your tax return.
  • Track your refund. You can track the current status of your property tax refund by using our Where is my refund? System. The system will show you which of the four stages your refund is in and whether there is anything you need to do to help us finish processing your refund. You will see the date your refund was issued when processing is complete.
  • Property tax relief for seniors. The Senior Property Tax Deferral Program offers seniors whose property taxes are high relative to their income the opportunity to remain in their homes by deferring a portion of the property taxes they owe each year. If they are currently participating in the program, qualified seniors can apply for a property tax refund that will be applied toward their outstanding loan balance.
