Al Michaels dropped a clever one-liner to describe the Giants-Cowboys officiating

One of the best things about legendary play-by-play broadcaster Al Michaels in the booth is that he always calls the game for what it is – no matter how great or ugly it gets.

Officiating the first half of Thursday’s game between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys gave Michaels plenty to talk about Prime Video Partner Kirk Herbstreit. A total of 16 penalties were called and 12 accepted in the first quarter – nine against the Cowboys and three against the Giants.

“It’s looking like Juneteenth here, also known as Flag Day, as you know,” Michaels told Herbstreit in the second quarter.

With just over two minutes left in the first half, those flags were flying. Somehow seven more penalties were called before the game went into halftime, including equalizing penalties against Dallas and New York with 28 seconds left.

“During the course of the game there were fouls by both teams,” said the referee.

“I bet,” Michaels joked in the broadcast booth.

After two quarters of play, the Cowboys led the Giants 14-9 at MetLife Stadium.
