River flood warning – NRVNewsFlood warning applies from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon…

WHAT…Moderate flooding is forecast.

WHERE…New River near Radford.

WHEN…From late Friday evening to Sunday afternoon.

IMPACT…At a depth of 17.0 feet, all of the Dedman Center’s lower parking lots are flooded. Flooding occurred at 20.0 feet along portions of Hazel Hollow Road (State Route 626) on the Pulaski County side of the river.

MORE DETAILS… – As of 3:15 p.m. EDT Thursday, the stage was 4.7 feet tall. – The Bankfull stage is 10.0 feet long. -Forecast…The river is expected to rise above flood stage early Saturday morning and reach a peak of 19.2 feet Saturday evening. It will fall below the flood mark late Sunday morning. – Flood stage is 14.0 feet. -Flood history…This crest is comparable to a previous crest of 19.8 feet on 11/20/2003. – For flood safety information, visit http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

…The National Weather Service in Blacksburg VA has issued a flood warning for the following Virginia rivers…

New River at Allisonia, affecting Pulaski and Wythe counties.

New River near Galax, affecting the independent towns of Carroll, Grayson and City of Galax.

New River at Radford, affecting the independent towns of Pulaski, Montgomery and City of Radford.

Severe flooding is forecast for the New River at Galax. Moderate flooding is forecast for the New River at Allisonia and Radford.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS MEASURES…

Turn around and don’t drown if you encounter flooded streets. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
