Who will replace Hoda Kotb on “Today”? Here are 6 options

After six years as co-host of TodayNBC’s mid-morning show, Hoda Kotb is stepping down to focus on her family. She announced the decision on Thursday morning and speculation immediately erupted on social media about who would replace her.

Kotb and Guthrie were the show’s first all-female hosting team. Kotb began her career as a correspondent for NBC DatelineTransition to co-moderation of the final hour of Today with Katie Lee Gifford and brings heart and humor to the program.

It’s critical for NBC to find the right replacement for Kotb, who said she wanted to be home with the two young girls she adopted in recent years. Today was at the head of the rival Good morning America on ABC in the key 25-54 demographic, and the network doesn’t want to lose that lucrative spot. Mornings are an advertising moneymaker, similar to late night shows.

NBC News has not commented on who might replace Kotb, the daughter of Egyptian immigrants. Here are five possible options.

1. Jenna Bush Hager

Hager seems like the obvious choice. She is already moderating the last hour of Today with Kotb, with whom she shares an easy chemistry. Young women love Hager’s likeability as a young mother and she is a popular social media presence. She lacks the in-depth news knowledge often required on morning shows – Kotb had the rare ability to switch between a glass of wine with Gifford and a discussion of the economy – but Savannah Guthrie is very strong on hard news, so maybe that’s not a problem.

2. Laura Jarrett

Jarrett checks all the boxes. Smart and already a member of Saturday Today Crew, Jarrett is also NBC’s senior legal correspondent. She would add more weight to the co-host role and, along with Guthrie, provide a formidable hard news presence.

Her frequent posts about her adorable children on Instagram also make her likeable Today‘s viewer. The Harvard Law School graduate, who covered Donald Trump’s hush money trial earlier this year, got her start at CNN.

3. Willie Ghost

Like Hager, Geist is already a member of the Today Team that moderates the Sunday edition. He is also a co-host of MSNBC Morning Joe and appears as a news anchor on weekdays Today. The chemistry between him and the crew is already good.

But NBC may want to preserve the women-on-female partnership that pushed it forward GMA in the reviews. And spirits Morning Joe Ties might make him too “political” (regardless of whether that’s true) in a divided time when morning hosts need to appeal to all stripes.

4. Carson Daly

Daly seems a less likely choice, but he’s already there Todayand the network has shown in the past that it is happy to promote this role from within. As a former MTV personality, Daly has the pop culture knowledge and connections essential to a morning news show. But like Hager, he hasn’t demonstrated any particular skill in dealing with hard news, and that will likely impact the network’s decision.

5. Sheinelle Jones

Jones co-hosts the third hour of Todayand she has become a crowd favorite. They love catching up on news about their three children, and Jones’ down-to-earth approach to work-life balance has earned her a strong following on social media. Known as a hard worker, the Philly native was there Today for 10 years. If she or Jarrett were chosen, it would be them Todayis the first black female co-host.

6. Ilona Maher

Yes, this is a choice out of left field, but why not have some fun with the new opening? And Olympic rugby medalist Maher is incredibly fun, finding joy in everything from finding love in the Olympic Village to her current assignment Dancing with the stars. She would also complement NBC’s semi-annual Olympics coverage, although she has no experience in broadcast news.
