Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb on limited production, sideline argument with Dak Prescott: ‘I failed myself’

CeeDee Lamb is off to a slow start in 2024 after a career season in which he led the NFL in receptions.

As did his Dallas Cowboys, who after a stunning Week 2 loss to the New Orleans Saints suffered another home loss against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, ending 1-2.

Lamb’s limited production on Sunday raised eyebrows. He finished the game with four catches for 67 yards. He caught just one pass for nine yards on six targets from Dak Prescott after halftime as the Cowboys fell behind 28-6. He also incurred a false start penalty and failed a late two-point attempt by Prescott.

But perhaps it was his visible frustration on the sideline that attracted more attention. Lamb was seen arguing with Prescott and trainers on the sideline and banging his hands on the turf while on the field.

Lamb declined to speak to the media after the game, raising further questions about the condition of the Cowboys and their All-Pro wide receiver.

On Tuesday, Lamb returned to his media duties, telling reporters that he had “let him down” on Sunday.

“Just being a professional — being a professional in this whole situation and understanding that it’s a long game,” Lamb said. “But when it comes to myself and my performance, I expect a lot from myself – more than anyone could ask of me. And honestly: I failed myself.”

“And obviously I let the team down because I was the game-changing player for the team and was obviously the guy they could lean on. And yes, I kind of let the game go to my head a little bit. But.” In the same sense, I knew what I could do, I knew what I brought to the table, and I knew what I could do in this area. With that said, there will be a difference in the future.

Lamb was then asked to clarify whether his frustrations lie with himself.

“Absolutely, absolutely myself,” Lamb continued. “And then I like my ability to contribute to the attack and knowing what I can do. So that played a big role.”

“And again, I can’t blame anyone. You have to start with the man in the mirror. And I’m a big believer in that, and watching that game kind of pissed me off. But I did that. Do you know what I’m doing?” “I can’t be mad at anyone.”

Lamb made a league-best 135 catches last season and ranked second in the NFL with 1,749 receiving yards and third with 12 receiving touchdowns. He added 113 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. It was a career year, earning Lamb his first first-team All-Pro selection.

He followed with a delay that ultimately resulted in a four-year, $136 million contract extension with $100 million in guarantees. Lamb missed the entire preseason and training camp.

In three games this season, Lamb has 13 catches for 218 yards and a single touchdown, well below his 2023 pace. His slow start and missed contact with Prescott have raised questions about a connection to his holding back.

On Tuesday, he was asked if being away from the team all summer contributed to his poor performance.

“There’s no excuse for that,” Lamb replied. “I have played football all my life. I know better.”

Lamb’s chance to turn things around comes quickly. The Cowboys will next face the New York Giants in primetime “Thursday Night Football,” where the eyes of the NFL world will be in focus.
