Keith Urban admits he was willing to “do anything” to boost his career

In 2001, Keith Urban was willing to “do anything” to get his career off the ground, including posing for Playgirl.

On a recent episode of SiriusXM’s “Literally! With Rob Low,” Urban explained that an employee at his record company presented him with the idea over two decades ago and he decided to go for it.

“It was a guy at my record company who said, ‘Hey, you know, we can do this piece in Playgirl and they’ll do a big, long, beautiful piece on the record.’ And I thought, ‘Great,’ and then we’ll go to a photo shoot too,” Urban told Lowe. “I thought, ‘Oh, okay.’ Luckily I play guitar and not a harmonica.

Elsewhere in the podcast, Urban and Lowe discussed the country star’s famous marriage to Nicole Kidman. Urban admitted that while many of his songs are about his wife, not all of them are about her.

“I always think of someone who has a famous partner or writes about relationships. Does it ever happen to you that you think, ‘Oh, this is about Nicole?’ Do you know what i mean? Do you ever have that? Lowe asked.

“I mean, has this ever become a problem where people say, ‘When you write something, you write a character where you know, I don’t know, things aren’t going well.’ Then you think, ‘People are going to think it’s about me and Nicole.’ Does that ever occur to you?”

“Oh yeah. Yes. People think everything I write is about them, and of course a lot of things are and a lot of things aren’t,” Urban replied. “I mean, you know, I lived a life. I’ve had different experiences, and it doesn’t always have to be a personal experience.”

“It could be an observation. You know, I recorded this song called ‘Brown Eyed Baby’ and X-People said, ‘Well, you can’t sing a song about a brown-eyed girl. I mean, it’s her.’ “She must have been so angry,” and I say, “Not really.”

“No. It’s just a song. It’s just a song,” emphasized Urban. “People get like, I don’t know. Well, it’s never like that, because I don’t think Dolly Parton actually worked 9 to 5.”
