When will Christian McCaffrey return? Latest updates for 49ers RB

play

When healthy, San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey is one of the best offensive players in the league. “When he’s healthy,” is a caveat that has become a theme for the running back and his team this year.

In early August, about a week into training camp, the 49ers announced that McCaffrey was dealing with a calf and Achilles tendon injury. In the seven weeks since, McCaffrey’s injury has kept him out of virtually all activity with the 49ers.

He missed every preseason game and was placed on injured reserve by San Francisco after the first week of the regular season. Trying to participate in limited practice before Week 2 proved too much for McCaffrey, and now he will miss at least two more games.

Here are the latest updates on McCaffrey’s injuries ahead of the 49ers’ Week 4 game against the New England Patriots.

CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY: 49ers place RB on injured reserve

When did Christian McCaffrey’s injury occur?

The 49ers initially reported that McCaffrey was dealing with a calf and Achilles tendon injury shortly before the start of training camp on August 6th. Even then, San Francisco acknowledged the possibility that the star running back could end up requiring a stint on injured reserve.

McCaffrey attempted to participate in limited practice before the 49ers’ Week 2 game against the Minnesota Vikings and experienced his “worst day” full of pain.

Christian McCaffrey update

Two weeks ago, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told the media that McCaffrey was in the most pain he had been during a practice before the team’s Week 2 game. Shortly after, San Francisco placed McCaffrey on injured reserve, meaning he will miss at least four games.

Multiple reports suggest it would be a surprise if the 49ers running back could return as early as possible, which would be the Oct. 10 Week 6 “Thursday Night Football” matchup with the Seattle Seahawks. That’s possible if McCaffrey is unlikely to miss more than four games.

On Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the running back had visited an Achilles tendinitis expert in Germany.

49ers running back depth chart

With McCaffrey injured and usual backup Elijah Mitchell out for the season with a hamstring injury, former free agent Jordan Mason takes over the starting role for the 49ers. He will be joined by 2024 fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo.

With 324 yards on the ground in three weeks, Mason is second only to Saquon Barkley in rushing yards this season.
