WATCH: Tornado likely damages homes in Florida ahead of Hurricane Helene

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A suspected tornado ripped through southwest Florida early Thursday morning as the outer rain bands of Hurricane Helene swept across the region.

Helene is getting stronger on her way to the Sunshine State. It is on track to make landfall in the Big Bend area around 11 p.m. ET. As Helene races toward the coast, conditions across the state are rapidly deteriorating.

Surveillance footage captured by Jennifer Wein in Cape Coral shows the chaotic scene outside her home just before 6 a.m., with debris flying through the air.

An analysis of the video by the FOX Forecast Center determined it was likely a tornado. A National Weather Service survey will determine exact wind speeds and strengths.

“All I know is that I was laying in bed and I heard a truck getting closer and closer to my house, and then my house started shaking,” Wein told FOX Weather after the horrific ordeal. “I could see everything flying outside.”

Wein, who had already struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder from Hurricane Ian, was lucky to escape significant damage this time. However, her neighbor’s fence was destroyed and the trees behind her house were split in half.

As Helene heads toward the coast, it is becoming increasingly clear that the storm will cause widespread devastation across the southeastern United States. The FOX Forecast Center warns of damaging winds, life-threatening flooding and an increased risk of tropical tornadoes from central Florida to South Carolina. A storm surge of up to 20 feet is forecast for Florida’s Big Bend area.

The peak tornado threat is expected to occur later Thursday, starting over Florida and spreading to Georgia and South Carolina throughout the evening and night.

Helene’s very rapid movement will allow the damaging winds to reach deep inland, causing massive tree damage and widespread power outages in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

South Georgia could experience wind gusts in excess of 100 miles per hour, causing structural damage and significant crop loss.

Helene’s potential impact is comparable to that of Hurricane Michael, which caused $2 billion in losses to the state’s agricultural industry.
