ESPN fires senior NBA writer Zach Lowe as brutal layoffs continue at network

ESPN has parted ways with another major NBA talent: writer and on-air commentator Zach Lowe has reportedly been fired.

Lowe started with the company in 2012 as a writer for ESPN’s own (and now defunct) website Grantland before diversifying his talents to ESPN.com and on television for NBA Today and NBA Countdown.

The news was first reported by The Athletic.

Lowe was said to have earned more than a million dollars a year, which was reportedly the main reason for the company’s decision to fire him.

Lowe’s departure follows the resignation of ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowksi and the firings of Robert Griffin III and Sam Ponder.

Zach Lowe was reportedly fired from ESPN as part of a cost-cutting measure by the broadcaster

Like these measures, the decision to fire Lowe was part of the company’s fiscal year planning, The Athletic reported.

He declined to comment to the outlet.

The move was heavily criticized by Lowe’s media colleagues, with Yahoo! Sports NBA writer Dan Devine calling it “galactically stupid.”

Meanwhile, PHLY Sixers sportswriter Derek Bodner compared the move to “giving up Michael Jordan.”

Lowe will certainly not be short of suitors, as many suggest that he could work again with his old Grantland boss Bill Simmons at The Ringer.

Regardless, it’s an amazing move by ESPN.
