Free COVID-19 test kits available in Iowa. How to order from USPS

Free COVID-19 home test kits are available again just in time for flu season.

Starting Thursday, the federal government will offer free COVID-19 home test kits. Each U.S. household can order four free tests. The tests also have a longer shelf life, and many of them have an extended expiration date. To find out if you can still use your test after it expires, visit the FDA website.

How can I get a free COVID-19 test in Iowa?

To order COVID-19 tests, visit the United States Postal Service website. Not only are the tests free, but shipping is free too. Tests are expected to begin shipping on September 30.

What is the main strain of COVID-19?

The predominant strain of COVID-19 is currently KP.3.1.1. Although COVID-19 no longer causes as severe illness as it once did, the CDC continues to track how the disease is changing.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, COVID-19 levels were moderate during the week of Sept. 8-14. About 16.8% of PCR tests conducted for COVID-19 were positive, according to the department’s data.

How many Iowa residents are vaccinated against COVID-19?

Johnson County has the highest vaccination rate in all of Iowa, with 29% of residents having received at least one dose of a current vaccine, according to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. Story County’s vaccination rate is 20%, and Polk County has 18% of residents vaccinated.

Overall, about 15% of Iowa residents have been vaccinated, according to HHS data from September 5.
