Information on garbage, recycling and bush collection

Garbage and recycling collection is currently taking place.

In inaccessible areas, delays and/or non-collection may occur.

Any garbage or recycling not picked up on Thursday will be picked up on Monday.

Please download the free AVL collects App or sign up for alerts on our website to stay informed about any delays or outages in sanitation services.

If trash or recycling pickup is suspended at any time today, we will send a notification through AVL Collects and other City messaging channels.

The brush collection has been temporarily suspended.

Bush teams will assist with emergency response and debris removal.

As soon as the situation allows, normal collections will resume.

Further impacts on Asheville Rapid Transit (ART)

Diversions apply to bus line WE-1:

Due to a road closure at Swannanoa River Road and Azalea Road, detours are in place between Swannanoa River Road and Tunnel Road and Swannanoa River Road and Governors View Road.

In the city centre, stops 436, 433, 434, 799, 432, 431, 471, 430 and 429 will be closed until further notice.

Arriving passengers are advised to use bus stops 437 or 546 during the diversion.

In the bus city, stops 418, 419, 420, 421, 423, 424 and 422 will be closed until further notice.

Departing passengers are advised to use the alternative stops 416 and 425 during the diversion.

Impact on events/facilities

  • The WNC Nature Center is closed on Thursday and Friday.

Canceling meetings/orders

  • All Asheville City Board and Commission meetings on Thursday and Friday are canceled.

Heavy rains from Helene affect Asheville Rapid Transit (ART) routes and the opening of parks and recreation facilities

Due to a road closure on Lodge St., detours are in effect for ART routes S1 and S5.

Bus stops along Lodge St., Sweeten Creek Rd. and London Rd. will be absent until further notice.

These include: 170, 610, 611, 612, 613, 614, 615, 616642, 643, 644, 645, 646, 647, 648, 649 and 650

Passengers can board at the regular stops listed above in-depth Buses at the following stops:

Route S1 and S5: Bus stop 651 is located on Biltmore Ave. near Bryson St.
Route S1: Bus stop 641 is located on White Ave. near W. Chapel Rd.
Route S5: Bus stop 137 is located on Fairview Road in The District.

Parks and recreation facilities

All Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) parks, community centers, and facilities will be closed on Thursday, September 26 and Friday, September 27 due to inclement weather. Previously scheduled activities, events, programs, and rentals will be canceled during this time.

The city of Asheville will experience heavy rains and strong winds starting tomorrow as a result of Hurricane Helene.

Staff from across the city are already working hard to prepare Asheville for the rain and wind that is forecast for us.

Fire in Asheville prepares proactively for major weather impacts by activating special teams This includes boat crews, saw crews, team leaders, safety officers, battalion and division leaders for the duration of the weather event. This allows Asheville Fire to continue to provide excellent service to the community while these personnel respond to storm-related emergencies.

Rainwater teams have inspected construction sites for ongoing stormwater projects, cleared debris from flood-prone areas, tested equipment in preparation for restoration work, and cleaned stormwater drainage grates.

City of Asheville Employees Staff from all strategic departments will be on call and ready to respond throughout the storm. Staff will meet to coordinate preparations and response during this weather event and adjust plans as needed.

The National Weather Service Forecasters are expecting 10 to 15 inches of rain in the Asheville area, with the possibility of flash flooding or localized flooding. You can follow updates at The National Weather Service website.

Tips for preparation

  • Stay calm.

  • Keep a supply of fresh water and non-perishable foods on hand.
  • Refuel your vehicles.
  • Clean the sewers near your home or business and remove any debris.
  • Make an inventory of your personal belongings and write down their approximate value. Keep receipts for expensive items.
  • Have a battery-powered flashlight with you.
  • Do you have a battery-operated radio, television or internet access that does not rely on electricity?
  • Do not approach downed power lines. Report a downed power line here.

Driving tips: Turn around, don’t drown

Due to the risk of fast-moving rain or flash flooding, the City of Asheville advises citizens to use caution on the roads. If possible, travel only when absolutely necessary. If you must drive, the City will update the AVL alert system and maps on Waze to provide up-to-date road information. As always, when there is a risk of flooding on the road, the following sentence should be observed: Turn around, don’t drown

As our community prepares for a weekend of wind and rain, it is important to note that some planned services, activities and events have been or may be impacted.

Parks & Recreation

  • From Wednesday, September 25th, 5 p.m., the parking lots in all of the riverside parks listed below will be closed.

    • Boat access area on Craven Street Bridge
    • French Broad River Park

hygiene

  • City of Asheville trash collection will operate as scheduled. If trash or recycling cannot be picked up on Thursday due to weather issues, it will be picked up on Monday. Normal tree limb collection routes may be delayed to support emergency response efforts.

ART services

  • There are currently no disruptions to the transit schedule. Delays or route changes will be communicated and announced via iRide and the Transit app.

Events

  • The Block Party Career Fair scheduled for September 26 has been cancelled.
  • Aston Park Tennis Centre and Municipal Golf Course are open until weather requires closure and will reopen as soon as possible. Please call clubhouses in advance to check status.
  • The AFD’s launch event on fire safety precautions planned for September 28 in the branches has been cancelled.
