Portage Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski’s Facebook page available again

Portage County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski’s personal Facebook page was back online Thursday morning, a day after the page was temporarily shut down, his wife said.

The Portage County Sheriff has come under criticism for a recent social media post about political campaign posters.

Meanwhile, Zuchowski continues to attract national attention, appearing on Fox News on Tuesday night.

The sheriff’s wife, Mandy, posted on Facebook on Wednesday that her husband had not deleted his page.

“Facebook has suspended Bruce’s page,” she wrote, followed by an angry emoji. “He hasn’t closed it if you’re looking for him. Lots of people have reached out to us.”

Republican Zuchowski, who is seeking re-election, has faced complaints about a controversial Facebook post that critics say amounted to voter intimidation.

What did the Portage County Sheriff say in his Facebook post?

In the post, Zuchowski suggested that people keep an eye on yards with Kamala Harris signs so they know where to send illegal immigrants to live.

“When people ask me… What will happen if the fickle, laughing hyena wins??” the post read. “I say… write down all the addresses of the people who had her signs in their yards! So… when the illegal human “locusts” (who she supports!) need a place to live… we already have the addresses of their (sic) new families… who supported their arrival!”

The sheriff defended his comments, saying in a subsequent Facebook post that he had been “misrepresented” in the news coverage and that his comments were protected by the First Amendment.

However, the original post that caused the furor was later removed from both his personal and the sheriff’s Facebook pages.

The sheriff has not responded to repeated phone calls and text messages seeking comment.

The post sparked strong reactions from Democrats and some residents, who filed complaints with local, state and federal authorities. The sheriff’s comments also prompted the Portage County Election Board to stop using sheriff’s deputies to provide security for in-person early voting after hearing concerns.

More than 100 people also attended the Portage County NAACP emergency meeting last week to discuss the issue.

Why does Facebook block accounts?

According to Facebook, the social media site blocks accounts “that do not meet our community standards or terms of service.”

An account may also be “locked for security reasons because it may have been compromised.”

“If your Facebook account has been suspended, you will be notified by email and when you access your account in an app or web browser,” Facebook’s website says. “We will also let you know whether you can appeal the suspension if you think we made a mistake. After you log in, follow the on-screen instructions to file your appeal.”

Portage County Sheriff’s Appearance on Fox News

Zuchowski appeared on Fox News Tuesday night to defend his comments and speak with an Arizona sheriff about the border crisis.

Zuchowski told Fox News that people have asked him what he would do if “30,000 or more illegals” came to Portage County, similar to what is currently happening in Springfield, Ohio.

“At this point, I’m not going to do anything illegal as sheriff,” he told Fox News. “After all the reasonable things we can do with people are resolved, I just told a couple people on my personal Facebook page that we need to remember where those signs were because if there’s no other place to put those people, I see this as a welcome mat for the people who supported them…”
