Denver Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL… although he did play.

Singleton sustained the injury in Denver’s recent win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He will undergo surgery “probably in about two weeks,” head coach Sean Payton said.

However, it’s likely that Singleton played with the injury without even realizing it. Payton said he sustained the injury “midway through the game” and “played with it for two-thirds of the game.”

“It was quite remarkable. Then he reported that he was feeling a little bit of pain,” Payton said. “They looked at it, we looked at it again and then he will definitely have surgery in about two weeks.”

The injury occurred on Denver’s eighth defensive snap of the game. Singleton went on to play 48 more snaps.

Payton added that both he and Singleton were surprised by the extent of the injury.

“It’s a tough one,” Broncos quarterback Bo Nix said. “If I had to explain to Alex one thing about what kind of guy he is, that would be it.”

“He’s the guy who tears his ACL on the sixth play and then goes out and finishes the game.”

Patrick Surtain II added: “This is crazy, man.”

“I’ve had players with ACL tears before, but I’ve never seen a player like that and I was able to see the MRI. I’ve never seen a player who felt like he could have played another game that night. The next morning the swelling was there, but that’s remarkable,” Payton continued.

The Broncos, without Singleton, will visit MetLife Stadium this weekend to face the New York Jets, who have won two in a row.
