Rep. Clay Higgins on Wednesday deleted a social media post in which he called Haitian immigrants “thugs” and “slapstick gangsters” after many of his congressional colleagues quickly condemned it.

The post, which Louisiana Republican Higgins deleted from Platform X within hours, was in response to news that a Haitian nonprofit group was seeking to file charges against former President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance over their repeated unsubstantiated claims that migrants eat pets in Springfield, Ohio. The claim, which the Republican presidential candidate and his running mate have repeatedly made without evidence, has led to bomb threats and school evacuations in the small city of about 60,000 residents.

In response to Higgins’ post, which included racist slurs about Haitians and called on them to “get their ass out of our country,” several House lawmakers confronted him on Wednesday, POLITICO reported. The lawmakers also called for the House Ethics Committee to look into the matter and demanded that Higgins be formally reprimanded.

In his post, which also included a screenshot of a news report about a Haitian group filing charges against Trump and Vance, Higgins called Haitians “savages” and promoted the baseless conspiracy surrounding the migrants, most of whom are in the United States legally.

“…Vudu, the worst country in the Western Hemisphere, cults, slapstick gangsters,” Higgins posted, “but damn if they don’t feel all sophisticated right now and bring charges against our President and Vice President,” he said, referring to Trump and his vice presidential candidate Vance.

“All these thugs better think straight and get their asses out of our country before January 20th,” the post concluded, referring to the date Trump and Vance would be sworn in if they win the November election.

Although he deleted the post after saying he prayed for it, Higgins told CNN he stands by the comments.

“It’s all true,” Higgins told CNN. “I can put out another controversial post tomorrow if you want. I mean, we have freedom of speech. I say what I want.”

Trump and Vance repeatedly support false claims about eating pets

The false claim about the migrants, which Trump infamously amplified during a presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris earlier this month, has been widely denied and refuted by law enforcement and other officials in Springfield.

In response, a Haitian nonprofit announced this week that it plans to criminally charge Vance and Trump. The San Diego-based Haitian Bridges Alliance filed the charges Tuesday under an Ohio law that allows private citizens seeking an arrest or prosecution to submit an affidavit to a prosecutor or judge for review.

Trump, for his part, has vowed that if elected to a second term, he would conduct “major mass deportations from Springfield, Ohio.” The Haitian migrants in Springfield – whose population has swelled to 15,000 in three years amid unrest in Haiti – are in the country legally.
