National Weather Service confirms tornado in Hancock County

HANCOCK COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) – The National Weather Service said radar showed a tornado touching down in Hancock County Tuesday evening.

The NWS said radar indicated the incident happened just before 6:30 p.m., five and a half miles east of Sneedville.

Deputy Woodward of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office said they received reports that the bomber landed near Highways 70 and 33.

The MPs were also informed that there were uprooted trees in the area.

The Hancock County Emergency Management Agency said no injuries were reported, but added that many trees were downed.

As of 10:40 p.m., Powell Valley Electric Cooperative reports 128 customers in Hancock County without power.

On Sunday evening, the NWS announced that it would send a survey crew to Hancock County on Wednesday to assess the damage.

It was the first tornado recorded in East Tennessee in September.

No further information was released.
