CHICAGO (WLS) — There was no history made at Guaranteed Rate Field on Tuesday night as the White Sox avoided breaking a record for most losses in a season by defeating the Los Angeles Angels 3-2.

After trailing the entire game, the Sox rallied in the eighth inning, pulled away by a run and won the game.

The Sox need to win their next five games, which seems like a difficult task if they don’t want to become the worst MLB team in modern history.

While the Sox may end up on the wrong side of history, the excitement at Guaranteed Rate Field is unmistakable despite the many empty seats.

“They don’t seem to have given up. They were there for almost every game they lost,” said fan Richard Hummel.

“Well, because I believe in the Sox and like Casey Stengel said when the Mets lost 120 games, ‘I couldn’t have done it without them,'” said fan James Connely.

The White Sox had never lost more than 106 games in a season before. They surpassed the 1970 team’s record in time when the New York Mets beat them on September 1, and they just kept stumbling from there.

Chicago has suffered losing streaks of 14, 21 and 12 games. The 14-game losing streak from May 22 to June 6 was a franchise record until the White Sox tied an AL record with 21 consecutive losses from July 10 to August 5.

Most baseball experts expected the Sox to be in the rebuilding phase this season, but very few would have predicted such a record-breaking lack of success.

The Sox are currently coming off their worst season since the New York Mets in 1962, with 120 losses. And although Sox fans were happy, that didn’t mean they were confident of their chances.

“It’s probably five out of 100,” said 10-year-old Madden Kavanaugh.

The Mets were a new expansion team when they set the losing record, unlike the Sox, who have a long history.

The 1899 Cleveland Spiders hold the major league losing record at 20-134.

According to experts, a lot must have gone wrong for the team to lose 120 games, including poor personnel decisions.

“This is not something we are proud of,” said general manager Chris Getz. “There are countless reasons why we are standing here today and breaking this record. However, I personally see this as a tremendous opportunity to build something.”

But whether they won or lost, some fans continued to show their unwavering support and wore their black and white jerseys with pride.

“We’re going into next season to win!” said fan David Malesky.

“Whether I ride or die, I’m still a Chicago fan,” said fan Michael Currey.
