Assessing the Titans’ 3 internal options to replace Nicholas Petit-Frere at RT

The Tennessee Titans benched right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere after an embarrassing mistake in pass protection led to a strip sack by quarterback Will Levis in Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay PackersHead coach Brian Callahan has since claimed that Petit-Frere remains in a position battle for the starting spot against the Miami Dolphins in week 4.

Although it appears to be a race between two men, the Titans have the following three internal alternatives.

Jaelyn Duncan

It was sophomore tackle Jaelyn Duncan who replaced Petit-Frere midway through the game against the Packers, and he is the biggest contender for Petit-Frere’s hopes of being a starter in Week 4. Unfortunately, Duncan didn’t fare particularly well against Green Bay’s pass rush. Pro Football Focus credited him with allowing two pressure situations on just 11 pass-blocking snaps, earning him a lower grade on defense (36.9) than the player he replaced (48.3).

Johannes Ojukwu

John Ojukwu is the other backup tackle on the roster. The undrafted second-year free agent from Boise State was a first-team right tackle during the offseason training program when Petit-Frere and Duncan were sidelined with injuries. Callahan heaped praise on him in those moments, but it’s probably a bad sign that both players quickly jumped above him in the rankings after returning to play.

Leroy Watson

Leroy Watson IV is the only tackle on the Titans’ practice squad. He knows offensive line coach Bill Callahan from their tenure together at the The Cleveland Browns. As with Ojukwu, it’s not a good sign that he was passed over in favor of Petit-Frere and Duncan. Watson appeared in just one preseason game and earned a lackluster pass-per-grade of 25.3.

Diploma

I’ve seen a lot of unrealistic scenarios on Twitter. Fans are understandably frustrated and desperate for solutions. It’s worth addressing some of these scenarios.

Peter Skoronski is not moving from left guard to right tackle. Two different Titans regimes have viewed Skoronski as a pure guard-lineman, and currently he is trying to survive as a guard without attempting a position change during the season.

While it may be a little more realistic, I don’t see Dillon Radunz moving from right guard to tackle either. He struggles at guard and Callahan has previously stated that he sees him as a center back. That move would catapult Andrew Rupcich or Daniel Brunskill into the starting lineup, which doesn’t exactly inspire much confidence.

The more realistic solution is for the Titans to seek outside help. This is difficult during the season, but one possible step would be to acquire experienced right tackle Chris Hubbard from the San Francisco 49ers‘ practice squad. Hubbard started nine games for the Titans last season and previously spent three seasons with Bill Callahan in Cleveland. He is familiar with the scheme and would face familiar faces on the offensive line.
