Caitlin Clark’s record night is not enough to knock Sun out of the WNBA playoffs

The Indiana Fever’s playoff run, led by WNBA Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark, ended Wednesday night at Mohegan Sun Arena with an 87-81 loss to the Connecticut Sun, who advanced to the semifinals for the sixth consecutive year.

Clark closed the chapter of her rookie season with another record: she became the first rookie in playoff history to record at least 25 points, five rebounds and five assists in a single game.

She finished Game 2 as the Fever’s leader with 25 points, six rebounds and nine assists.

It wasn’t easy for the experienced team from Connecticut.

Tempers flared early between Clark and DeWanna Bonner, and the tension between the two teams continued throughout the game, with Connecticut taking a 16-2 lead at one point.

Clark helped the Fever get back into the game, but towards the end of the game the Sun became too strong.

Clark put the Fever ahead by one point with a 26-footer with 4 minutes left in the game. But Marina Mabrey immediately answered for the Sun. The teams traded baskets over the next two minutes or so, and Bonner finally hit a three-pointer to take the lead with 1:50 left in the game.

Mabrey hit another crucial three-pointer to give the Sun a four-point lead 46.1 seconds later. The Fever struggled to score any more points, and Connecticut made it perfect.

Alyssa Thomas led the Sun with 19 points, 13 assists and five rebounds. Bonner added 15 points and eight rebounds. Mabrey sank three 3-pointers and finished with 17 points.

DiJonai Carrington, who was named the WNBA’s most improved player before the game, scored ten points and four rebounds.

Kelsey Mitchell had 17 points and Aliyah Boston 16 points for the Fever.
