Improved Boxscore: Phillies 9, Cubs 6 – September 25, 2024

Well, tonight was not a very good game, as the Cubs lost the finale – and thus the entire series – in Philadelphia.

They scored six runs, four of them coming off the bat of Nico Hoerner on his two-home run night (making him the Ankin Law: Making it Personal Player of the Game). And Isaac Paredes had his first four-hit game as a Cubs. But that was about it for the Cubs hitters; at least until Dansby Swanson’s two-out RBI double in the ninth inning went nowhere.

There was one bright spot tonight, however, and that was the rookie’s first hit.

After going 0-3 on his first three attempts at the plate, Kevin Alcantara finally got his first major league hit, a little swinging bunt down the third base line. And while it wasn’t exactly a Statcast-impressive liner, that ball will look good on his mantel for years to come. Good for him.

Javier Assad was definitely not on it in his final start of the year, and not just because he finally allowed some damage with runners in scoring position. He was hit hard and often, giving up eight earned runs (three after he left the field) on eight hits and three walks with just three strikeouts over 4.1 IP. That dropped his ERA from 3.34 to 3.73. Not an easy thing to do in start No. 29 of the year. Oh well. The Phillies are pretty good, and Assad’s year was still very solid.

Cubs lose. One series remains.
