A New York congresswoman known for her left-leaning opposition to her Democratic colleagues is calling on the Big Apple’s mayor, Eric Adams, to resign after a series of raids on his top advisers and others in his inner circle in connection with a federal investigation.

“I don’t see how Mayor Adams can continue to govern New York City,” wrote Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on X.

Ocasio-Cortez’s district includes parts of two New York City boroughs. The tweet was the first time in over a year that she used the platform to lash out at her hometown mayor. In April 2023, she indirectly criticized his support for a new contract for the city’s police department.

“The flood of resignations and vacancies threatens the work of the government,” she wrote. “The continuous investigations will make it impossible to recruit and retain a qualified administration.”

Adams responded sharply to the socialist congresswoman, calling her a fraud in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“When someone who self-righteously claims that people accused of serious crimes should not be in prison now says, based on rumors and insinuations, that the second black mayor of New York should resign – without a single charge being filed – that is the height of hypocrisy,” Adams said. “I lead this city to protect it from exactly this kind of sham politics. The people of this city elected me to fight for them, and I will stay and fight no matter what.”

Earlier this month, New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban, Adams’ latest ally, resigned. In addition, an Adams aide was fired after being accused of trying to extort money from a Brooklyn car owner with the help of Caban’s twin brother.

In a statement, Caban’s attorneys Russell Capone and Rebekah Donaleski told Fox News Digital that the former commissioner would cooperate with investigators and that he himself was not the target of the federal investigation.

Rumors of an impending resignation have been circulating for days after raids were carried out on the homes of Caban and his twin brother, a security consultant. James Caban is under investigation for allegedly using his ties to the NYPD to protect nightclubs from police surveillance.

Federal agents issued arrest warrants for three other high-ranking Adams associates on the same day as the Cabans – First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks III and Timothy Pearson, a former NYPD officer who now serves as an adviser to the mayor.

Last year, federal agents seized Adams’ devices as he left a Manhattan event and searched the home of one of his top fundraisers. Adams denied any wrongdoing but confirmed last month that he had received a subpoena from federal prosecutors and said he and his team were cooperating.

“For the good of the city, he should resign,” Ocasio-Cortez added on Wednesday.

Winnie Greco, another Adams associate, was also searched in connection with an investigation into campaign donations.

Adams appointed Caban as the NYPD’s first Hispanic commissioner in July 2023.

He was succeeded by interim commissioner Tom Donlon, a retired FBI agent who previously headed the National Threat Center and was responsible for the Terrorism Watch List.
