Bozeman police engage in standoff with armed suspect, residents urged to stay safe

Bozeman Police informed the public of an increased police presence in the area of ​​9th and Lamme.

According to authorities, people in the area had to be evacuated because a man had barricaded himself in a residential building and was armed with a rifle.

The BPD is asking residents to stay in their homes and seek shelter as the investigation continues into the early morning hours.

Officers said they received reports of an assault with a weapon as the suspect threatened a person early Tuesday evening; officers responded and searched for the suspect as he barricaded himself inside the building.

Law enforcement say they are using various methods to contact the individual and resolve the incident peacefully, as a negotiator is on site.

At the time of publication of this article, no contact has been made and no confrontation has occurred.

FULL UPDATE, 6 a.m.: This remains an active incident. The Lewis and Clark County/Helena PD SWAT team is now on scene to provide additional support. The shelter-in-place warning remains in effect for anyone within one block of the accident scene – stay away from windows until further notice. Individuals who were issued a warning were notified via 911 callback last night. Please continue to avoid the area.
