The Weather Channel’s Jim Cantore is in Tallahassee.

Around 4 p.m., Cantore posted on X that he was in “TLH.” An hour later, Hurricane Helene was forecast to have sustained winds of 130 mph at landfall, making it a Category 4.

This was confirmed when Cantore was spotted preparing for a live recording on Monroe Street across from the Florida Capitol.

On Wednesday, Cantore was already in Port Richey and before that in Hudson Beach, just seven miles north.

Cantore is one of the best-known meteorologists on television and has been known as a harbinger of hurricane damage for nearly four decades.

He is famous, or perhaps infamous, for his appearances before and especially during major weather events, often seemingly putting himself in danger to demonstrate how dangerous a storm is.

On Wednesday afternoon, Cantore posted on X that the threat posed by Hurricane Helene to the southeastern United States “cannot be underestimated.”

“This will be a historic storm for many with flooding and storm damage, including in the southern Appalachians. Pray I’m wrong, I would too. Take care of yourselves and protect your families and property as best you can,” Cantore said.

Debbie McDonald, Cedar Key resident and general manager of the Cedar Inn Motel, said when Hurricane Idalia hit the Nature Coast last year, she knew her town was in trouble when Cantore came to stay on her property.

“If Jim Cantore shows up in your town, you’re screwed,” she said.
