Game notes: The Tigers just keep winning.

Detroit’s magic number to make the MLB playoffs is down to four after Tuesday’s 2-1 win over the Rays, fueled by another Cy Young performance from Tarik Skubal and another loss by the Minnesota Twins. The Tigers have now won 12 of their last 15 games and can sweep their sixth straight series with another win against the Rays on Wednesday.

Keider Montero comes into the game looking to rebound after being responsible for one of the team’s few losses in his last game against the Orioles, allowing five runs in 4⅔ innings in a 7-1 loss. Montero had been pitching well before this game, coming off two straight wins, including a complete shutout against the Rockies two weeks ago.

The Rays entered the series on a four-game winning streak to preserve their playoff chances, but were unable to mount a comeback against either Skubal or Beau Brieske, who finished the final two innings. Wenceel Pérez provided Detroit’s only offensive effort with a two-run ground-rule double in the fifth inning with the bases loaded.

The Tigers and Rays close out the series at 1:10 p.m. on Thursday, with Reese Olson listed as Detroit’s likely starting pitcher. After that, the Tigers host the Chicago White Sox in town to close out the regular season.
