National Weather Service confirms tornadoes in LaGrange and St. Joseph counties

(WNDU) – The National Weather Service has confirmed that two separate tornadoes touched down in Michiana yesterday after assessing storm damage in LaGrange and St. Joseph counties today.

According to the NWS, the tornado in LaGrange County was confirmed to be an EF-1 tornado with peak sustained winds of 95 mph.

Our team was out in LaGrange County last night where we found what appeared to be damage to some barns, as well as downed trees and power lines. We also saw the immediate response from crews and residents assisting with the cleanup.

We also learned that two people suffered minor injuries when their horse-drawn carriage overturned in the wind.

As for the tornado in St. Joseph County, it was confirmed to be an EF-0 on the north side of Mishawaka near the Meijer on Grape Road. The confirmation came after funnel clouds and strong winds were reported in the area.

WNDU First Alert Chief Meteorologist Matt Engelbrecht kept the public updated with live reports throughout the day and early evening.
