Every word from Mikel’s post-Bolton press conference | Press conference | News

Mikel Arteta held his post-match press conference against Bolton at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday following the 5-1 Carabao Cup win.

Here is everything he had to say on the following topics:

on the performance of our young Gunners:
Yes, it was a really positive night. The result, the performance. We gave a lot of senior players minutes and they really showed a lot of quality tonight. On top of that, we gave a lot of academy players a lot of chances. They responded really well and it’s so fulfilling to see their faces, their reactions, how much it means to them. Such a great night.

on Jack Porter’s reaction when he started for Arsenal at the age of 16:
Well, we told him yesterday and he was immediately overjoyed. I think he spoke to his family. And yes, they weren’t prepared for it. It’s a big step. It’s a big occasion for them. And I think they were nervous about it. But I think he reacted really well. Even yesterday in training he was very calm. His teammates really helped him with that too. And what an experience and what a way to break a record.

on Ethan Nwaneri’s first goals for the club:
The second goal, I was really happy for him because he scored. I’m very happy because I know how his teammates would react if he hadn’t scored. So overall he was really good again. I think it was a really strong performance from him. I think he really feels like a part of us. You can see that he plays with that confidence, that belief and that understanding of what he has to do on the pitch. That really impressed me.

about our older players guiding the younger players:
Yes, they did that yesterday in training and gave them advice. I think the guys feel really comfortable with them. Because it’s a great group of players and they can really be themselves if they have any fears, they can ask questions and they’re happy to help. And it’s great that they show that leadership as well. And that sense of caring, which is important and that we all need at some point in our careers.

on Raheem Sterling’s performance:
Yes, it’s very good. I think he’s getting better and better. I think physically you can see that he’s making progress. When the game opened up a bit, you knew what he could do, what he could do. He was involved in a few goals, so it was a very positive evening for him.

on David Raya’s injury and whether he will be there this weekend:
We don’t know yet, he has a muscle injury.

about why Jack Porter was chosen as goalkeeper:
Jack has been training with us since pre-season. We are confident that he can fulfil the role he plays in the national team. We have seen what he can do and believe he was the right choice.

on how close Ethan Nwaneri is to starting in the Premier League:
Here we go, this is another step. I think he is exceeding all expectations. He is exceeding all expectations and my expectations on his way to the first team. He is part of us, so he will get the minutes.

about the dream of building a complete team of academy graduates:
I have all kinds of dreams, but it’s nice to have one, that’s positive. What is the reality of a dream is the team I have to lead.

on the question of whether the players have school tomorrow morning:
There are some who say they have to be there, it’s going to be great. They were excited after the game and spoke to the players to thank them too. It was a beautiful moment.

about what Mikel Arteta did when he was 16 years old:
When I was 16, I lived alone in La Masia in Barcelona and trained between the B team and the first team.

When asked if he recognized himself in Jack Porter:
In Jack? I wasn’t thrown into it like that. I had a situation when I was 17, when I went from the B team to Paris. That was a big step. I know a little bit how he feels, but I had a little more time to prepare than Jack.

to switch off from football between a quick succession of games:
It’s not easy at the moment. Of course we spend the time at home with our families, the rest of the day we prepare a game and think about the next one, the lineups, the journey, the game situations that might come our way and how to prepare for them. It’s really busy but it’s what we want. We’ve had an incredible week in every way, emotionally, physically, learning-wise and also as a coach. We had problems to deal with and from what I had in my head during the international break to what actually happened and the players we had at our disposal, it was very different. It was good.

on the question of whether Mikel has any other hobbies besides football:
No, my main goal is to spend time with my wife and kids when I have time. Yes, tennis is one of them. I don’t have much time to play, but my kids try to get me to play Playstation, Mario Kart and stuff like that. I’m not a big fan of that yet.

about what distinguishes the current group of players in the squad from previous ones:
Well, I think that’s the moment in your career when you start dreaming or pursuing certain goals and when you achieve them, you want something else. If the team, the club can’t offer you that at that moment, you have to do it somewhere else. That’s something natural, I think.
