MAGA Rep. Clay Higgins calls Haitians “criminals” who must leave the US

Tell us how you really feel, Clay Higgins.

The Republican congressman from Louisiana wrote a confusing post against Haitians on Wednesday, calling them “thugs” and “slapstick gangsters” who need to “get their asses out of our country.”

Higgins, 63, said his outrage stemmed from a Haitian nonprofit’s decision to file charges against JD Vance and Donald Trump for their role in sparking a recent wave of chaos in Springfield, Ohio, over the spread of an unfounded rumor that Haitian immigrants were stealing and eating residents’ pets.

“These Haitians are savage,” Higgins wrote. “They eat pets, vudu (sic), the nastiest country in the Western Hemisphere, cults, slapstick gangsters… but damned if they don’t feel all cultured right now and bring charges against our President and Vice President.”

Higgins concluded his now-deleted post with a veiled threat: “All these criminals better get their heads together and get their asses out of our country before January 20th.”

January 20 is scheduled as inauguration day for either Trump or Kamala Harris, depending on who wins the election on November 5.

Higgins’ post sparked shock and ridicule in equal measure. On Wednesday afternoon, his most liked comment was: “Okay, great wizard, calm down.” Another top response was: “I’ll give you this much credit: you laid bare the racism for all to see. You’re not hiding behind a hood.”

Others poked fun at Higgins’ misspelling of “voodoo,” which is particularly ironic given that Higgins was born in New Orleans, a city known for its rich history related to the African diaspora religion.

Higgins, whose cover photo on X is a photo of Trump during his first assassination attempt, has long had a penchant for conspiracy theories. Last fall, he claimed that the FBI sent agents on “ghost buses” to instigate the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Recently, former police officer Higgins was outraged that Thomas Matthew Crooks’ body was cremated before he could personally come to Pennsylvania and examine it. This, he said, means that the medical examiner’s report on Crooks’ death – he was shot by a sniper – cannot be fully trusted.

“The problem with not being able to examine the body is that I don’t know 100 percent whether the coroner’s report and the autopsy report are accurate,” he said at the time. “We’ll actually never know.”
