13-year-old arrested after threatening middle school in Roanoke

UPDATE:A 13-year-old boy was taken into custody Tuesday in connection with an investigation into a threat made at James Breckinridge Middle School.

Just before 3 a.m. Tuesday, Roanoke police were notified of a threat to the school on social media. Investigators worked to determine the origin, collaborating with public safety partners and Roanoke City Public Schools school administrators.

Investigators concluded that the threat was not credible and came from a 13-year-old boy who was taken into custody. After speaking with the suspect, police applied for an arrest warrant for uttering a threat over a public airway.

The juvenile court granted the charges and the teenager was sent to the Roanoke Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing.

Roanoke City Public Schools had previously issued an appeal to families and staff after police concluded the threat was not credible.

RCPS announced that students will return to school on Wednesday, September 18.

“Roanoke City Public Schools does not tolerate threats or acts of violence. Students and families are reminded to speak up immediately if they see or hear something. At the same time, we also ask families to talk to their child about the consequences of threats. Actual threats or jokes about threats, including swatting, will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action and may be a criminal offense,” the appeal to parents states.
