Jaylen Brown turned down $50 million worth of endorsement deals to launch his own shoe brand

BOSTON – Jaylen Brown has added many titles to his resume in recent months. Now, in addition to being an NBA champion, MVP of the Eastern Conference Finals and MVP of the NBA Finals, Brown can also call himself a sneaker inventor.

Brown now has his own signature shoe under his new performance brand 741. Brown introduced the brand on Tuesday night at X.

Complex Sneakers also posted a picture of Brown’s first sneaker – The Rover – on Instagram on Tuesday evening.

“With innovation at its core, 741 blends advanced technology and minimalist design to redefine what it means to reach your potential,” 741 said in a press release. “These sneakers are designed for champions, for those who strive for excellence with every step.”

Brown has been a sneaker free agent since 2021, although he primarily wore Nike when he was on the court for the Celtics. But given his offseason issues with the sneaker giant — including Brown’s rejection by Team USA for the Paris Olympics — it was time for the 27-year-old to find something new to slip into every night.

According to 741’s press release, Brown turned down over $50 million worth of endorsement deals with other major sneaker companies because he wanted full ownership and creative control over his own brand.

The name 741 also has a deep personal meaning for Brown. According to numerology, the number 7 – his number with the Celtics – represents spiritual awakening, wisdom and understanding. The four symbolizes hard work, stability and practicality, while the one stands for new beginnings, creativity and independence.

“741 is more than just a sneaker brand – it’s a statement of independence, creativity and personal responsibility,” Brown said in the press release.

Each of the 741 sneakers produced is a limited edition, and pre-orders have already begun for The Rover, which launches on October 22nd – the same day the Celtics will raise their 18th championship banner at TD Garden before opening the 2024-25 NBA season against the New York Knicks.
